Changing your Gear Oil - Tech Tip

Engine oil isn’t the only lubricant that needs changing in a motor vehicle on a regular basis.

  • Transmission oil (Manual and Automatic)
  • Differential/s
  • Transfer Case
  • Transaxles
  • Power Steering Fluid
  • Suspension fluid
  • Brake Fluid

All of these items generally take a lubricant or hydraulic type fluid, required to be changed at a recommended service interval. It is important not to forget servicing these if you are a DIY person.

If you are starting to hear whining noises coming from the rear end of your vehicle, your differential could need servicing.

Once you determine it is time to change the differential fluid/s - to make life a little easier, the Penrite Gear Oil range all contain the correct dosage of LSD (Limited Slip Differential) additive, pre-blended into the formulation.

This means that you can use it whether you have a standard hypoid type differential or a limited slip type. It also means that you don’t need two separate lubricants if you have an LSD differential and it removes any misapplication errors if you are not sure what type of differential is in your vehicle has.

The LSD additive has no effect on gearboxes or transfer cases, so Penrite Gear Oils are safe to use in Differentials, Transmissions and Transfer Cases.

It comes in three viscosities to cover most applications - SAE 80W-90, SAE 85W-140 and SAE 140. All are API GL-5 rated for extreme pressure handling and are available from most good auto resellers.
