Hello,

Can you help me understand why the 10W40 has a Cold Cranking Viscosity of 6487 with a Viscosity, Kinematic, cSt at 40°C of 92 while the 10W60 has a lower Cold Cranking Viscosity of 5282 but a much higher Viscosity, Kinematic, cSt at 40°C of 178? They are both 10W oils but the 10W60 has a lower CCV but with a much higher viscosity at 40°C. How so?

Thank you,

Ben

Hi Ben

The 10W rating means that the oil is tested at -25°C and is below a permissible value at that temp. The SAE 40 vs SAE 60 value means that viscosity at 100°C is with in a permissible range. Meeting these requirements whilst producing an oil with other desired performance characteristics is part of the art and science of oil formulating which includes the use of additives like viscosity index improvers which can modify the relative difference of these values. Have a look at the links below that may clarify some of these things:

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Thank you Costa. So just confirming the 10W60 oil is less viscous/ thinner at -25degC than the 10W40 but at 40degC the 10W40 is less viscous than the 10W60?

Cheers,

Ben
