I am trying to work out the difference between the HPR Full Synthetic oils (e.g. 5W-40) and the Full Synthetic (e.g. Vantage 15W-40). I understand the differences in Viscosity and that Vantage is a Repco 'Brand' but what is the difference in the oil? Both are fully synthetic and is it just basically that the HPR is a newer product? I currently use Vantage Full Synthetic 15W-40 in my Honda B Series Track Car but this seems to be getting harder to find so I'm wondering if I should move to HPR 5W-40? Thank you.

Hi Andrew

I am not certain which oils you are trying to compare, for example we have VANTAGE PREMIUM MINERAL 15W-40 and VANTAGE SEMI SYNTHETIC 15W-40 neither of which are full synthetic. Have a look at the info in our Knowledge Centre, where there are explanations and background information on a range of topics that you might find of interest and that may clarify things:

https://penriteoil.com.au/knowledge-centre/Penrite-Knowledge-Centre/197/What-is-the-Penrite-Knowledge-Centre/461

Generally speaking, with in our range, when there are two oils of the same viscosity, then they are likely to be formulated using different types of base oils or have different performance levels.

I specified the oils I am comparing above.

I'm comparing the HPR Full Synthetic range of oils (e.g. 5w-40) to your 'standard' Full Synthetic range of oils (e.g. Vantage 10w-40 sold by repco or just the 10w-40 sold at Supercheap).

What's the effective difference between these two oils apart from the cold viscosity and is the HPR range going to replace the older 'standard' full synthetic range at some point?

Thank you.

Hi iauto

FULL SYNTHETIC 10W-40 and VANTAGE FULL SYNTHETIC 10W-40 are similar, have the same performance levels and I would choose between them based on price and convenience. HPR 5 is quite different compared to these and features a range of other performance levels.

To the best of my knowledge all these oils will continue to form part of our product range.

For reference and clarification you made mention of "Vantage Full Synthetic 15W-40" which is not a product we make and caused me to misunderstand your query.

Cheers

Thank you Costa and sorry for the confusion.

Would you recommend HPR 5w-40 or Full Synthetic 10w-40 for a high-performance Honda B series on the race track?

I used to use Ten Tenths Racing 15W-40 but decided it was over-kill (and expensive) given that I change the oil after every 4 hours on the track anyway and it comes out very fresh i.e. just slightly brown.

Thank you.

Actually, I was just looking at one of your tables and HPR 5W-40 (HPR 5) replaces 5W-30, 10W-30.

So HPR 10 which replaces 10W-40, 15W-40 which makes it the better comparison to Full Synthetic 10W-40.

So which would be better for my track applicaton HPR10 or Full Synthetic 10W-40 please?

Hi iauto

All these products are formulated from the same types of synthetic base oils and given that you have used Racing10 (10W40) in the past, I would stick with this grade in the first instance.

You can then use oil pressure and oil temp data to decide if you are happy with the grade you have selected or whether to consider the heavier HPR 10, 10w50.

Cheers
