Hi, I have recently purchased a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 litre hemi V8 with MDS.

The owners manual recommends either a 5w-20 or 5w-30 oil meeting MS-6395. I believe this is predominently to meet californian emission regulations as the SRT and previous 5.7 hemis specified 5w-40.

Your lube guide suggests 5w-20 but I would like maximum protection as these engines are known for seizing lifters and chewing out the camshaft and would prefer to use a 5w-30 for additional protection when hot.

I found a few other oils you make also meet MS-6395 the one I am most interested in is:10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER)

Does this meet all the requirements and is it ok to use on a daily driver?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Is this Cherokee still under warrantee?

Our information show that these vehicles call for a 5W-20 oil that meets the Chrysler Material Standards 6395 specification. If this vehicle is out of warranty there would be no issues in using our 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) considering it still technically is suitable for use where the MS-6395 specification is required.

Just bare in mind that the 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) is thicker than the originally specified 5W-20, this may result in a lower fuel economy.

Thank Vinnie,

No longer under warranty and Jeep do specify 5w-30 oil can be used as long as it meet MS-6395.

What benefits is there using the 10 Tenths compared to Enviro 5w-30?

Fuel economy is secondary to me. Engine protection is #1 priority.

The extra Zinc in 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) I believe will be beneficial to the long life and performance.

No worries Andrew, it is hard to say which product is more ‘’beneficial’’ as they both are exceptional oils in there respected applications. In this case the ENVIRO+ 5W-30 (FULL SYN) is not suitable for use where the required MS-6395 specification is required, making the 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) a better product for this application.

The 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) also features a full zinc anti-wear package for added engine protection.

Sorry, I meant ENVIRO+ GF-5 5W-30 (FULL SYN.) which meets MS-6395.

In any case, if the 10 TENTHS RACING 5W-30 (100% PAO & ESTER) contains extra anti wear I think thats what I will go with.

Thanks for your assistance

No worries, yes the ENVIRO+ GF-5 5W-30 (FULL SYN.) is also suitable for use in this application.

Thank you for choosing Penrite!

Thanks guys. Andrew I have the same Jeep as you, bought it recently, only 22,000klms on it. The Hemi tick a worry for me too. I bought a Melling 10452HV oil pump for it, but at hot idle I see 37psi oil pressure. My mechanic reckons not to fit the Melling as yet, being that it is a fair bit of work. I am not sure what oil is in my Jeep, but have bought 10 Tenths 5W-30, will pit that in soon, then recheck the PSI. From all my Googling, I believe Chrysler did increase the size of the oil pumps in 2013/14. Nothing greatly bigger, but an improvement.

Vinnie, I have been using Penrite all my life, starting in 1976. It is great stuff.

Thanks again guys, for the information.
