I have a 2004 turbo diesel hilux. I am about to try the penrite GL4 75w90 full synthetic gear oil in the manual transmission. I have traditionally used Caltex Easyshift 75w90 in both gearbox and transfer case. I am wondering if it is safe to run a GL4 oil in the transfer case or is a GL5 oil better for the transfer case?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your inquiry, TOYOTA specify either GL4 or GL5 75W-90 for both the Gearbox and Transfer case.

GL5 Gear Oils create Shift quality problems in Manual Transmissions due to the amount of "EXTREME PRESSURE" additive. GL4 performance is superior in Manual Transmissions, it does not effect shift quality associated with EP like GL5.

You can consider either GL4 or GL5 in your Transfer Case, no shift quality issues as they do not have Synchro's.

Regards

Jamie

Cheers Jamie,

have always heard that GL5 oils weren’t friendly on synchro rings.

Would you say a GL 5 always a better option in a conventional 4x4 transfer case as opposed to a GL4 (which I have been using for a few years)?
I also have a 2006 Hdj100r Landcruiser with a centre diff/transfer case setup. I have purchased some penrite trans gear for the centre diff/transfer on that.

also, does penrite manufacture oils which are sold under the Repco house brand? Ie - are oils in “Repco” branded bottles actually manufactured by penrite?

cheers,

matt

Hi Matt,

As previously stated You can consider either GL4 or GL5 in your Transfer Case, no shift quality issues as they do not have Synchro's. If you have been using GL4 with no issues we recommend sticking with it. Also means only 1 product for both Transfer Case and Gearbox.

Regards

Jamie
