Hi.

I have a 5 speed manual gearbox from a 1970's Toyota Celica (unsure exactly what year) being used behind a Holden red 202 6cyl. This is the rarer P51 gearbox compared to the more common W50. One difference is the P51 uses a Porsche designed c-band type syncro. These syncro's are no longer available to buy so I want to be extra careful what oil I use in this gearbox. Your product selector guide recommends gear oil 80w-90 but this is a GL-5 oil. An old workshop manual I found recommends SAE 90 API GL-4 for this gearbox. I was thinking your progear GL-4 75W-90 would be best, do you have any suggestions further to this?

Many thanks,

Ryan.

Hi Ryan

I do not have specific info on the P51 transmission and so can't confirm the information you have found in the workshop manual.  Further, I don't have a mineral, SAE 90 or xxW90 GL-4 rated oil I can direct you towards and would not recommend a synthetic oil in a transmission from the 70's unless it has been rebuilt more recently. Care should always be taken when considering synthetic oils in applications where older seals may be involved.

We do have MILD EP GEAR OIL SAE 110 which is GL-4 but this is a grade thicker. In an older and so worn transmission this may be an advantage, unfortunately you will only be able to determine this is by trial and error.

Cheers
