Motorcycle 4 Stroke Engine Oils

Motorcycle 4 Stroke Engine Oils

Motorcycle 4 stroke engine oils are designed to be used where engine, gearbox and clutch all share the same fluid. This is known as being suitbale for use where a "wet clutch" system is utilised. In these types of engine /gear case systems, the clutch is immersed in oil, so the oil cannot contain additives that may cause clutch slippage such as friction modifiers. Oils compatible with wet clutch systems for 4 stroke motorcycles can be blended to meet international standards such as JASO MA, MA1 or MA2. These are recognised as the specifications suitable for use with wet clutch.

Apart from the need to have oil that works with wet clutces, motorcycles can use similar oils to those used in passenger cars although motorcycle manufacturers don't tend to recommend very light viscosity oils as is recommended for many passenger cars.

Motorcycle oils can be mineral, semi synthtetic or full synthetic based, depending on the application. As with passenger cars, synthetic oils have become more popular in the last decade as power outputs have risen and stress on the engine has increased.
